This December, embark upon an exploration of iconic and lesser-known Peruvian destinations during the 13-day Peru: Land & Water, History & Nature tour from Classic Escapes. In addition to Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu, the itinerary includes the Sacred Valley, Cuyuni, Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata and Lake Sandoval.

Among the host of planned experiences are a motorized canoe expedition on the Madre de Dios river; a visit to the wreck of the Fitzcarrald steamboat, which inspired an award-winning film by director Werner Herzog; a trip to Puerto Maldonado’s Butterfly Farm, home to 3,800 varieties of butterflies and moths; a day in a community of indigenous Cuyuni people; a weaving demonstration given by a renowned Andean weaver in the Sacred Valley of the Incas; dining within a pre-Columbian temple on an ancient archaeological site at La Huaca Pucllana restaurant; a guided tour of the Larco Museum in Lima, where the collection includes more than 45,000 objects from 3,000-plus years of Peruvian and pre-Columbian history; and a guided tour of Machu Picchu.

Tour Dec. 5–17, with prices beginning at $3,995 per person, based on double occupancy. The price includes superior double accommodations, daily breakfast, most meals, transfers and internal flights. Exclusions include international flights and meals not included in the itinerary.
