Everybody’s Business

Welcome to Global Traveler’s annual business- and first-class survey. It took countless hours to compile this unparalleled guide, but it was well worth the effort. You are holding in your hands what we feel is the most comprehensive, easy-to-understand comparison of airline first- and business-class cabins around the world.

In addition to investigating obvious concerns about cabin seating plans and recline, we’ve gathered information about in-flight technology. We’ve collected details about in-flight audio, video, news and on-demand options. We’ve compiled information about which carriers continue to offer complimentary first- and business-class amenity kits versus those that have elected to make the kits — or just individual comfort items — available by request only. And we haven’t forgotten about the pre-flight experience. Are lounges shared or dedicated? Are high-speed or wireless connections available for free or for a fee?

While the issue of seat recline is central to in-flight comfort, comparisons can be tricky. Some airlines measure recline like a compass; zero-to-180 degrees, with 180 indicating a recline that will result in a lie-flat bed. Others measure from a right angle of 90 degrees, in which case 60 degrees is the equivalent of 150 on the zero-to-180 scale. Still others prefer to indicate recline in inches.

To simplify things, we’ve requested – for the purposes of this survey – that all airlines give us their recline information on a zero-to-180 degree scale. In cases where information was missing, or forms were not returned, we combed the Internet for answers. In many instances, we were able to glean the information from airline Web sites. Consistency was our ultimate goal. We wanted you to be able to compare apples to apples, B747-400s to A340s and B767-300ERs to A310s.

It’s true, as world travelers we are often at a loss to explain why foreign carriers seem to outpace U.S. carriers when it comes to offering a premium first- or business-class flight experience. That may be changing. American Airlines recently announced an initiative to improve its first- and business-class products.

The carrier plans to install new lie-flat seats and offer enhanced in-flight entertainment in the business-class cabins of its Boeing 767-300 and Boeing 777 aircraft. Enhancements to the Boeing 767-300 business-class cabin are slated to begin in 2006. American will begin installing the new business-class seats on its Boeing 777 fleet beginning in 2007. Additionally, American is upgrading its Boeing 777 first-class cabin by extending its popular “Flagship Suites” to 20 additional aircraft.

“Based on rigorous research and customer and employee feedback, American Airlines is making investments to enhance the customer’s travel experience,” said Jim Carter, managing director of Eastern Division at American Airlines. “New international routes, new terminals and Admirals Clubs in New York (JFK), Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Miami (MIA), new transatlantic menus, lie-flat business-class seats and in-flight entertainment will all make the business-class travel experience more comfortable and convenient.”

While American Airlines is upping the ante when it comes to its transatlantic menus, British Airways is focusing on pre-flight dining by giving premium-class passengers the option of eating dinner in the lounge before boarding the plane. The idea behind the innovation is to optimize potential in-flight sleep time enabling passengers to arrive at their destinations well rested and ready to do business.

What’s more, British Airways has retained a panel of food experts and chefs to guide its pre-flight and in-flight catering programs. The goal is to create a dining experience that mimics that of a top-class restaurant. Enhanced service goes beyond cuisine to include upgraded place settings more in line with what diners would expect in a quality dining venue.

TAP, Portugal’s flagship carrier, is also focusing on f ood. The airlines’ culinary advisor, well-known Portuguese chef Victor Sobral, has compiled a set of recipes for the dishes served in TAP’s Top Executive class. In addition, TAP is planning to debut an audio channel featuring Portuguese poetry.

South African Airways continues to offer the only direct service 18 flights per week from the United States to South Africa. Facing that long-haul flight, there’s no doubt the carrier’s premium-class passengers appreciate the 180-degree lie-flat beds in its Premium Business Class cabin.
Air New Zealand is in the process of overhauling its long-haul service. The enhancement program, dubbed “Inspiring Journeys,” involves an $800 million upgrade of its Boeing 747-400 fleet and the addition of eight new Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The refitted 747s were recently introduced on flights from San Francisco (SFO) and will begin service from Los Angeles (LAX) in November. The new 777 aircraft will begin flying from San Francisco in November.

The upgrade includes a shift to three new classes of service including Business Premier, a hybrid of the traditional first- and business-class services. Highlights of Air New Zealand‘s Business Premier service include a 22-inch-wide leather armchair that converts to a 6-foot, 7.5-inch lie-flat bed; an ottoman that can be used as a footrest or a visitor’s seat allowing passengers to work or dine together; a 10.4-inch high-resolution personal in-flight entertainment system that swivels and tilts to create the perfect viewing angle; soft lighting programmed to smooth the transition between time zones; in-seat power ports to connect laptops or other portable devices; subtle reading lights for both upright and sleeping positions and refurbished lavatories featuring granite-style countertops, timer-controlled faucets and full-length mirrors.

Back in the United States, Continental Airlines is making its signature BusinessFirst class service available to more passengers on its Boeing 757-serviced transatlantic routes. The aircraft are also being fitted with video and audio “on demand” systems allowing passengers to start and stop programming at will. In addition, the carrier is installing power ports that will allow passengers to plug in their laptops without needing a special adapter.

While each of the carriers featured in this survey are taking steps to improve their already-top-notch first- and business-class service, even more innovations are on the horizon when it comes to aircraft design.

“Boeing is focused on enhancing the premium customers’ cabin experience,” said Jeff Cacy, Boeing director for the Americas, airline marketing services. “New airplane cabins pressurized to fly at lower altitudes will leave passengers feeling more refreshed. Passengers can also look forward to saving time as we build airplanes designed to tie continents together by overflying hubs and going the distance.“
