Emirates introduces a laptop and tablet handling service for its flights to the United States in light of the new TSA-imposed restrictions.
U.S.-bound passengers transiting in Dubai will be able to use their larger electronic devices on the first part of their journey and at Dubai International Airport before handing them over at the gate. Once handed over, the electronics will be carefully packed into boxes, loaded into the aircraft hold and returned to customers at their U.S. destination.
“Our aim is to ensure compliance with the new rules, while minimizing disruption to passenger flow and impact on customer experience,” said Tim Clark, president, Emirates. “Our new complimentary service enables passengers, particularly those flying for business, to have the flexibility to use their devices until the last possible moment.”
The free service is also available to U.S.-bound customers beginning their travels in Dubai, although Emirates said passengers are encouraged to pack their electronic devices into their checked luggage ahead of time to avoid delays.
With the new restrictions taking effect March 25, Emirates deployed extra staff at the airport to ease and assist passengers.
The carrier stressed the detailed searches of all hand baggage on non-stop flights to the United States from Dubai. Passengers should declare their devices before the search or ensure devices are packed in their checked luggage.
Passengers are able to continue to bring smartphones on board, as data shows 90 percent of Emirates passengers use their smartphones connected to WiFi on U.S. flights while only 6 percent connect via laptops and 4 percent via tablets.
The ban does not apply to Emirates’ U.S.-bound flights via Milan or Athens.
