We’ve seen the car industry transform and move toward electric technology as a means to reduce the impact on the environment, but what about planes?

While the technology is not quite there yet, EasyJet works to develop a fully electric commercial plane within this decade. It partnered with U.S. engineering startup Wright Electric, founded by a team of engineers and battery chemists.

Wright Electric’s goal, as stated on its website, is for every short flight to be zero-emission within 20 years, starting with the EasyJet project.

An electric jet for airlines would mean cutting emissions and noise, and saving fuel costs — one of the biggest expenses for airlines.

Sights are currently only set on designing a plane to fly 335 miles, about 20 percent of the flights EasyJet currently operates. The jet would be more suited for short-distance carriers similar to the EasyJet brand.

Time will only tell if we’ll see other airlines follow suit in this clean-energy initiative. While companies like Zunum Aero work to develop hybrid jets with engines using a combination of battery and conventional power, EasyJet leads the way with a fully electric plane.
