Dubai International Airport set a new record for its monthly passenger traffic when it exceeded 8 million passengers in July, according to a Dubai Airports report.
July passengers totaled 8,065,789, compared to 7,616,792 in July of last year, marking an increase of 5.9 percent. The first seven months of this year saw a total 51,120,057 passengers pass through the Gulf hub, up 6.2 percent from the same period last year.
The fastest-growing region for the airport is South America. In July, traffic to the continent rose 59 percent, followed by Asia at 20 percent, with China and Thailand contributing the most traffic. Eastern Europe accounted for 16.3 percent of the growth, and Africa grew by 9.1 percent.
India remained the top destination with 1,028,508 passengers, followed by the U.K. with 610,151 passengers and Saudi Arabia with 573,170 passengers. The most popular destination cities were London, Kuwait, Mumbai, Bangkok and Riyadh.
“We have started the second half of the year on a very positive note and with the Islamic festival of Eid Al Adha coinciding with the summer rush later this month, the upward trend is expected to remain strong in the third quarter,” said Paul Griffiths, CEO, Dubai Airports.
