If you reside in New York, Minnesota, Louisiana or New Hampshire, your driver’s license will no longer get you through airport security starting as early as next year.
The change stems from the REAL ID Act, passed 10 years ago by Congress to set minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and photo IDs. While enforcement of the new regulations was announced in 2013, REAL ID has been rolled out in phases, with the final phase of enforcement involving how people access commercial aircraft.
“The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards,” said Amanda DeGroff, spokesperson, Department of Homeland Security, according to a Forbes report.
If state IDs do not meet the new standards, federal agencies cannot accept them as a person’s sole proof of identification. According to the Department of Homeland Security website, full enforcement is scheduled to begin “no sooner than 2016.”
“DHS will ensure the public has ample advance notice before identification requirements for boarding aircraft change. That notice will include information on the process for individuals with a non-compliant driver’s license or identification card to be able to travel by aircraft,” announced DHS.
It is currently unclear when the new standards will be enforced exactly, but people from the four non-complaint states and American Samoa will need to carry a second form of ID, such as a passport, when the new policies are implemented.
