The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a fine to Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest and United Airlines for providing inaccurate information to passengers. The information includes compensation for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, as well as being denied boarding or bumped from a flight. United Airlines received a fine of $35,000. Alaska Airlines and Southwest received fines of $40,000. American Airlines received a fine of $40,000. All airlines were commanded to cease and desist from further similar actions. The Department of Transportation requires eligible compensation for passengers who are bumped from flights. Rules further state airlines must provide bumped passengers with all written terms, conditions and limitations, as well as individual priority rules, regarding compensation. The information is required upon request by any person at an airport ticket counter or boarding area. Airlines are also required to provide passengers with notice of baggage liability limits, and cannot limit their liability for baggage loss, damage or delay to less than $3,500. After a series of inspections at nationwide airports, the Department discovered the four airlines listed above either failed to provide passengers with the required information, or provided incomplete, outdated or inaccurate information. “We are committed to ensuring that air travelers know the rules and have accurate information about compensation when they are bumped from flights and for lost, damaged or delayed baggage,” said Anthony Foxx, transportation secretary, United States of America.
