Introduced in 2012 in the Maldives, PER AQUUM Niyama’s Subsix, the world’s first underwater nightclub, reemerges as the premier underwater playground with a recent redesign reflecting its aquatic surroundings.

Located about 19.5 feet below the waterline more than 1,600 feet from the shoreline, Subsix is reached via speedboat. Upon arrival, partygoers descend a three-tier staircase into the depths of the navy blue waters of the Indian Ocean to reach the club.

While dining on contemporary cuisine and enjoying creative cocktails, guests gaze at a variety of marine life; attracted to the lighting of the club, aquatic animals such as reef shark swim right before your eyes, allowing guests to enjoy unobstructed views of the exotic animals from the club’s floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Unique features include bespoke chairs with soft anemone fingers, a garden of coral-like chandeliers and a huge clam-inspired bar in the center of the room with a fiberglass shell glowing with Subsix’s mood lighting that shifts from pure white in the morning, to lavender at dinnertime and blue in the late evening.

“Subsix is the closest you can get to the reef without a mask or wetsuit. Guests fell so in love with the setting from the start that we knew we had hit on something special and had to take it to the next level,” said Dietmar Koegerl, general manager, PER AQUUM Niyama.

The club is part of the Niyama, a luxury resort sitting an exhilarating 40-minute seaplane journey south of Malé.
