Thanks to a collection of experiences ranging from arts and culture to adventures in the great outdoors, Nova Gorica in western Slovenia — along the border with Gorizia in Italy — has been named one of the world’s two official Capitals of Culture this year. Here’s a sampling of what travelers can look forward to:

Hike and Bike
Enjoy history immersions while hiking and cycling along themed trails embracing cultural landmarks, natural beauty and significant landmarks. Bike Slovenia Green offers green gourmet cycling holidays, while Edelweiss E-bikes can guide visitors along the Slovenian Miracles and the Alpe Adria Cycle Path. Hike The Gorica Circle of Peace, which connects trails from the north and south leading to Mount Sabotin. This trail leads to a ridge that serves as the national border between Slovenia and Italy, with views of the gothic ruins of the 14th-century church of St. Valentine.

Visit Pilgrimage Sites, Sports Landmarks
Explore Sveta Gora, a pilgrimage site that’s the location of a Franciscan monastery and basilica. Traces of past World War II activity include caverns and trenches. Access it on foot or by bike. For an arts-focused journey with a sports component, visit Nova Gorica’s Basketball in the Jungle, or enjoy summer outdoor table football events or photographic exhibitions celebrating film icon Pier Paolo Pasolini.
See Monuments
Visit the Monument of Peace in Cerje, where you can pause to take in views of the Vipava Valley and the Karst. Within the monument are historic and artistic treasures. Prefer a water-based adventure? Nova Gorica is the location of river kayaking at Solkan Kayak Center and stand-up paddleboard expeditions on the Vipava River.

Feeling energetic? The Walk of Peace is a cross-border trail that passes through or nearby battle locations, cemeteries, ossuaries and open-air museums. Experienced hikers can tackle the Banjšice and Trnovo Plateaus, or climb Nanos above the Vipava Valley. Along the way, pass the Otliško Okno, a window part of a natural rock formation.

Nov 18, 2025For Peripatetic Professionals, the Whole Planet Becomes One Big Office Space
It’s about 1 p.m. Central European Time on a Thursday, and I'm riding on a boat off the coast of Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, scouting for seals basking in the sun on the rocky outcroppings that dot the sea. Thanks to my captain, who lived all his life on one of the islands of the Gothenburg archipelago, we find them quickly, delighted to watch them move, play and hop in and out of the water. By 4 p.m. I am back at my virtual office, ready to start my business day just as most of my North American clients are coming online.

Nov 17, 2025Explore the Historic Enclaves of Poland’s Baltic City
As one would expect for a city dating to the 10th century, the history of Gdańsk, Poland, played a significant role in trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the Baltic Sea. In the late Middle Ages, Gdańsk became an important harbor and was part of the Teutonic State (1308–1457). Heavily impacted by World War II, today the city thrives as an important economic and cultural center ... although, unfortunately, it’s often overlooked by North American leisure tourists.
