Have an inner Viking you need to set free? Denmark wants to help. Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings beginning at the National Museum in Copenhagen. Filled with historic treasures that include Viking weapons, jewelry, coins and rune stones, the museum is located close to Tivoli Gardens where the Restaurant Valhal offers a Viking-themed menu. Continue on to the Viking Ship Museum on the Roskilde Fjord, where five reconstructed Viking longboats are on display, built from actual wrecks salvaged in the deep, cold waters of the fjord. South of Roskilde, the ring fortress at Trelleborg includes an archaeological museum and reconstructed castle. Travel west in Denmark over the Great Belt Bridge to the island of Funen to visit the burial mounds and warship at the Ladby Viking Museum, then continue on to Ribe, which ranks as Denmark’s oldest town, complete with a fully reconstructed Viking market. Recreated Viking ships and homes can be viewed at Bork Viking harbor northwest of Ribe. From here, just outside the town of Vejle, lies Jelling, one of the most important historic sites in the country and the location of ancient Viking rune stones. The remaining foundations of a Viking castle are also here, along with Viking artifacts displayed at the Hobro Museum in Hobro. About a half hour from Hobro in Nørresundby at Lindholm Høje is the largest ancient burial ground in all of Scandinavia, dating to the Iron Age and Viking era. End your path in Aggersborg near Løgstør, where you can wander among the ruins of a Viking fortress. Along the way, shop at the Viking-themed markets you’ll encounter. Haggling while brandishing a sword is highly discouraged.
