Delta Air Lines and Canada’s Westjet launch a new joint venture increasing cross-border cooperation.

For travelers, this would bring coordinated flight schedules, new non-stop flights, more destinations, expanded codeshares and seamless, convenient connections. The plan awaits approval from regulators. There would also be frequent-flyer benefits, including reciprocal credits for top-tier members of both airlines’ mileage programs.

“This agreement will bring heightened competition and an enriched product offering to the transborder segment, both of which will benefit our guests,” said Ed Sims, executive vice president for commercial operations, Westjet. “This is an important step in Westjet’s mission to become a global airline.”

The partnership will be the eighth of its kind by Delta, following its first in 1993 — an agreement with now defunct Northwest Airlines and KLM. The deal would boost Westjet’s market share compared to competitor Air Canada.

Westjet is in the final steps of launching a low-cost spin-off carrier called Swoop.
