Delta Air Lines is hoping a new feature on its Fly Delta app will cut down on overcrowding at the gate. The new feature allows for virtual queueing ahead of boarding, as of last month.

The feature is similar to a pager handed out by restaurants for guests waiting for a table. Delta is hoping travelers will relax at nearby establishments instead of crowding the gate, waiting to board.

Delta will keep its established boarding order and colors, but travelers will now be able to see when their seats are boarding.

“We continue to put boarding under the microscope – looking at how technology can help alleviate some of the crowding at the gate that all of us have experienced,” said Rhonda Crawford, vice president, Delta Air Lines. “Customers have told us that being notified when their seat is boarding will help reduce the stress of that experience.”

Virtual queueing is one of several new features in the Fly Delta app, acting as the airline’s digital concierge, including integrated new features like real-time TSA waits in specific cities, offering pre-select meals and launching international automatic check-in.

Delta’s CEO Ed Bastian previously said the company wants to make the Fly Delta app the centerpiece of travelers’ experiences, digitally taking them through each part of their trip.
