The contentious overhead bin space is one of the many stresses of airline travel. With ever-shrinking seats and increasing fees, it’s rare you hear of an airline adding more space — anywhere on the plane.

Delta Air Lines has done just that, rolling out larger overhead bins in response to travelers increasingly carrying their luggage onto the plane rather than paying for checked bags. Overhead bins have become crowded and space is perpetually limited as more travelers opt out of checking bags.

Delta’s new design is available only on a small number of flights, but the hope is this is a new trend that will take off elsewhere. Delta’s new overhead bins store the bags vertically instead of horizontally, allowing more bags to fit in the space.

Boeing is also designing bigger bins, which can accommodate six standard carry-on bags, two more than typical bins. Airbus is also designing planes with 60 percent more overhead space.
