Dallas Airport Using Luggage Robots

DFW Baggage Claim

Feature

Dallas (DFW) is testing robots to help passengers with their checked bags.

The test involves autonomous robot vehicles in the international terminal. The robots help passengers recheck bags after clearing customs and security when making connections to domestic flights. The robots are being tested in place of human baggage attendants.

The robots are FLEET vehicles developed by the Dutch technology firm Vanderlande, and they can process about 450 bags per hour. The new process allows connecting passengers to place their rechecked bags on the vehicles, which transport the luggage to the baggage belts. Travelers identify their airline on a touchscreen to tell the system where to drop their bags. The test involves four FLEET robots.

“As we go through the pilot program, DFW will evaluate this new technology and assess potential applications of robots and autonomous vehicles at different points within the airport,” said Khaled Naja, executive vice president of infrastructure and development, DFW.

“This particular application is both exciting and challenging for us, because FLEET will be working in a passenger area,” said Andrew Manship, executive vice president for airports, Vanderlande.

Human attendants will still staff the area to help travelers if needed.
