According to Siew Kum Hong, regional director for Airbnb in the Asia Pacific region, China is on track to be Airbnb’s largest market by next year.
Rapid growth in early 2019 led the Asia Pacific region to account for 50 percent of Airbnb’s top 20 most-visited destinations in the world, with an expanded availability of Airbnb Experiences in more than 500 cities and towns, up from just 10 locations at the start of 2018.
Within the region, Kum Hong notes China has been one of the most popular destinations for travelers, with the number of Airbnb guests doubling in 2018 and increasing by 200 percent in 2019.
Kum Hong attributes this success to China’s focus on quality listings, dedicated and talented local staff, and China’s own Airbnb product and engineering team, the only such team outside of North America. Airbnb in China also uses the country’s own communication apps like WeChat as well as their payment platforms, WeChat Pay and Alipay, making it easy for locals to make and accept payments.
With these measures in place, China has the potential to be Airbnb’s strongest and biggest market in 2020.
