Chalet Mirabell, perched on a plateau near Hafling and Merano in Alto Adige, Italy, overlooks some of the region’s most beautiful scenery and epitomizes why the Alps never lose their appeal.

Christine and Michael Reiterer, who founded the 5-star, 70-room and -suite hotel in 2004, worked hard to set themselves and the hotel apart from the area’s many luxury hotels for both families and adults-only travel groups. In 2008, they bought more land and added 30 high-quality rooms. Around the same time, they invested in expanding the guest experience with the addition of new relaxation rooms, including the room of tranquility, an alpine lounge and a heated natural bathing pond.

“We feel very fortunate that hospitality and our love for honest, down-to-earth South Tyrolean cuisine were virtually passed on to us at birth,” said Michael Reiterer. “We grew up in our respective parents’ hotels and were given the responsibility to look after our guests. Although we owned a café with a beautiful terrace in Meran for 12 years, the dream of owning our own hotel always stayed with us.”

Christine notes, even with the additional responsibilities they took on, they found joy during the process of expanding and improving the hotel, including buying the adjoining 43,000 square feet of bordering land after some tough negotiations.

“Thanks to the efforts of our loyal and hardworking staff, we managed to ascend the list of top hotels in South Tyrol,” said Christine Reiterer. We are committed to keeping our place in ‘best-of’ lists facing all the upcoming challenges and developing our property further.”

Under their direction, Chalet Mirabell’s grounds are further enhanced with one of the largest natural swimming areas in South Tyrol, a 64,000-square-foot spa and a 107,000-square-foot garden. The expanse also enables Chalet Mirabell to create an intimate spa and wellness facility appealing to its diverse variety of guests. This extends to the Gault Millau and Michelin Guide-acclaimed restaurants, as well as separate rooms for guests with and without children. Menus on both sides offer dishes crafted from products of surrounding farms, organic meat from the village butcher and herbs from the on-site garden. A vegan option is always available, as are items appealing to younger diners.

Mountain villas, running between 1,722 to 3,261 square feet, are outfitted with a private pool, sauna, designer kitchen and terrace. There are 10 different suite categories and room options for families, couples or friend groups, all with panoramic views and interior design blending Alpine coziness with Mediterranean flair. The property also features free mountain bike rental, e-bikes for a fee, access to native Halflinger horses and rides, and various tours of the region.

When the two of us entered The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo, past the backlit boutique items and local artisan-painted wood carvings, the place wrapped us in a feeling of tranquility. Its stone walls, earth tones, woven wall hangings and furniture made of natural materials reminded us we are part of nature’s spectrum, the abundant windows showing native plants and trees outside.
