Cathay Pacific will install WiFi on its entire wide-body fleet starting in 2018. All Cathay Pacific and some Cathay Dragon flights will have the connectivity within a few years.
The company will start the rollout in mid-2018, with completion scheduled for 2020. Cathay Pacific’s newest plane, the Airbus A350, currently offers in-flight WiFi. The addition of the service to the company’s Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s is reportedly in response to customer demand.
Paul Loo, chief customer and commercial officer, Cathay Pacific, said, “we have been listening to our customers who have told us that staying connected is important to them.”
“We envision that by 2020, all of our wide-body aircraft will have in-flight connectivity capabilities. This will open up a wealth of opportunities for us to provide more innovative experiences for our customers.”
The airline will use Gogo’s 2Ku satellite-based broadband systems, making Cathay one of the first carriers in Asia to use this technology. It enables fast browsing, email checking and access to social media, but likely can’t support music or video streaming.
