Artist Bruce Nauman is the focus of a new exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy, on view through Feb. 26, 2023. The exhibit “Neons Corridors Rooms” features 30 works created by Nauman since the mid-1960s showing Nauman’s evolution of his fascination with spatial and architectural elements.

The new exhibition takes up more than 16,000 square feet of Navate Gallery at Pirelli HangarBicocca, along with outdoor areas and the center’s Reading Room. Among the works are six neon pieces, five video and sound installations, sculptural underground architectural models and a selection of tunnels. Corridors and rooms are central, reflecting Nauman’s manipulation of space, while inviting the viewer to experiment with movement within these created spaces.

Viewers are led along a physical path, encouraging a personal exploration of limits, while also raising questions related to how we interact with various spaces — and how different sounds, lights and other elements may alter this experience. Among the featured works are Green Light Corridor (1970), Going Around the Corner Piece with Live and Taped Monitors (1970), Dream Passage with Four Corridors (1984), and the neon My Name As Though it Were Written on the Surface of the Moon (1968).

Established in 2004, the exhibition venue was once an industrial plant that served as a manufacturing center for the production of railway carriages, electric and steam locomotives and other machinery. Its conversion to support the Pirelli HangarBicocca non-profit foundation makes it one of Europe’s largest contiguous exhibition spaces.
