Legions of fans following the residents of Downton Abbey have turned the PBS television show into a worldwide hit. Fans who want a closer look at the differences between the upstairs and downstairs quarters of an early-20th English manor house similar to the one portrayed in Downton Abbey are in luck: Several companies are now offering tours the promise to reveal house secrets.
BritMovieTours offers two coach tours that include stops at Highclere Castle, the real-life setting for Downton Abbey. The tour also includes the nearby village, the church and the manor home of character Matthew Crawley. Smithsonian Journeys offers a tour led by Carol Wallace, best-selling author of To Marry an English Lord. Blue Badge Guide Rosalind Hutchinson, an expert on the Edwardian era, accompanies Wallace on the tour that includes accommodation at nearby estate Tynley Hall and a visit to the village of Bampton, used as the location for many of the exterior scenes in Downton Abbey.
While joining a tour won’t earn you a peerage, you’ll be treated to a wealth of fascinating information about the making of Downton Abbey and its cast.
