The Federal Aviation Administration approved a new design that will allow planes to have wings with folding tips.

As of mid-June, this license applies to folding wing tips on Boeing 777X planes. The tips will be made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and, when folded, the wingspan will decrease from 235 feet to 212 feet. The shorter wingspan meets Code E gate regulations, allowing these larger planes to park at gates that typically can only accommodate planes with smaller wingspans. The current wing measurements are approved when the tips are folded only after landing.

As part of the 777 and 787 Dreamliner series, Boeing’s new 777X aircraft will feature larger windows, a calming lighting scheme on board and improved architecture. There will be two models: the 777-8 and the 777-9, which differ in length, the number of seats (375 compared with 425) and flight range, but both will have the same wingspan and the recently approved folding wingtips.

Elsewhere in aviation, NASA is testing wingtips that can fold in flight, making it easier for planes to navigate unpredictable weather and wind patterns.
