The commercial aircraft provider predicts China’s industry need will grow by $1.025 trillion over the next 20 years. It is the first Boeing-projected trillion-dollar aviation market, with an anticipated need of more than 6,800 aircraft. “As China transitions to a more consumer-based economy, aviation will play a key role in its economic development. Because travel and transportation are key services, we expect to see passenger traffic grow 6.4 percent annually in China over the next 20 years,” said Randy Tinseth, vice president of marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The predictions say China needs more than 5,000 new single-aisle planes through 2035, three-fourths of the entire, international new aircraft need. The rising low-cost carriers fuel the need for more single-aisle airplanes, as China’s middle class grows and continues to travel frequently. The widebody fleet in China is expected to triple in size, with 1,560 new aircraft, including the Boeing 787, 777 and 777X. Currently, more than half of all commercial aircraft in China are Boeing-made. “The continuing expansion of China’s middle class, coupled with new visa policies and a wide range of widebody airplanes with new technologies, capabilities and efficiencies, gives us every reason to expect a very bright future for China’s long-haul market,” added Tinseth. On a worldwide scale, Boeing expects new delivers to reach a value of $5.9 trillion, as nearly 40,000 commercial airplanes are delivered.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
