Southern California’s Bob Hope Airport underwent a name change that sheds the moniker of the legendary celebrity. The airport transitions to Hollywood Burbank Airport after 14 years of being named for the late Hollywood comedian and film star.
The name change is intended to help prevent confusion about the airport’s location. Originally opened in 1930 as United Airport, the facility underwent several name changes, including Hollywood-Burbank Airport and Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport.
The transition’s completion is expected this summer. The airport’s website currently reflects the change although the URL is unchanged — it is currently still bobhopeairport.com.
The airport is one of several regional alternatives to busy Los Angeles International Airport. It is also slated to get a new terminal under a $400 million plan approved by voters. The airport’s original 1930s-era terminal will be replaced by a modern, 14-gate facility slated to open in 2022.
