The Rush

by John Wroblewski

Jul 11, 2012

Fast-paced action, rabid fans and a fan-friendly team all lead to a great night.  Thanks to the hospitality of the Chicago Rush and Media Relations Manager Ryan Young, I got a little extra access while enjoying an exciting game between the Rush and the San José SaberCats of the Arena Football League.

Chicago RushArena football is an intense version of standard football.  A shorter field, inbounds nets, two-way players and other unique features make arena football a lot of fun.

Prior to the game, we encountered some passionate tailgaters.  Despite us arriving empty-handed, the tailgating crew (part of the Rush fan club) welcomed us with open arms and delicious Greek chicken.  We quickly realized this was no ordinary tailgating.  Next time, I will bring something to that party.

The Rush rewarded that fandom by dedicating a large area in the parking lot to the tailgaters.  This is just one example of the Rush appreciating their fans.  Their numbers have grown steadily, and I plan on joining the fun again.

Young gave us a tour of the AllState Arena, including the pressbox.  We saw legendary Chicago broadcaster Les Grobstein preparing for the game.  We also saw both teams performing pre-game drills.

The SabreCats jumped out to an early lead, and despite the Rush hanging close, turned that lead into a 75–61 victory.  There was never a dull moment.

Aside from providing exciting football for Chicagoans, the Rush helps bring in tourism dollars, as many fans travel to see their teams.  Rosemont-area hotels always see an increase in occupancy on Rush game nights.

Along those same lines, since the team has no more home games and has been eliminated from the playoff picture, I will be heading to Milwaukee this weekend to see the Rush play the Mustangs.  I just can’t wait for next season!

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
