Time for a mini geography lesson on Miami.
In Miami, South Beach is known for its iconic Art Deco architecture, active boardwalk and party vibe. However, there are several other Miami neighborhoods beyond South Beach that are attractive to travelers.
For example, drive a bit farther north and you’ll find Mid-Beach. Compared to South Beach, Mid-Beach is more upscale, nestled with more locals and certainly quieter than her southern neighbor.
Today’s story begins in Mid-Beach, where I recently enjoyed a three-night stay at The Palms Hotel & Spa.
Still family-owned and -operated, The Palms originally opened in 1940 as The Sea Isle Hotel. An extensive fire in 1984 forced its closure before finding new ownership in the late 1980s and opening once again in 1992.
The history of the property feels necessary to explain because once you step inside, you can’t help but feel generations of travelers who have walked through the hallways before you. The property itself has a mix of tropical greenery meets white shiplap with a dollop of family gatherings on the large Caribbean porch near the gazebo. It’s truly unique.
My time at The Palms kicked off with a luxurious spa treatment at The Palms Aveda Spa. I felt my troubles melt away while enjoying the Zen Ayurvedic Massage, a one-of-a-kind treatment incorporating warm oils, aromatherapy and pindas to balance my mind, body and soul in 50 minutes (don’t knock it until you try it; I was a mushy mess by the end).
I also enjoyed lunch on Essenia Restaurant’s terrace, along with cocktails and appetizers at Essenia Bar. The farm-to-table ingredients were a highlight, each item plated with perfection.
My king-sized corner room faced the Atlantic Ocean and could easily be described as upscale, cozy ocean décor. Housing two bathrooms and plenty of space, my sixth-floor room overlooked the green canopy over the resort as well as the pool area.
There are plenty of common areas within the hotel, many with natural light, large orange tiles and greenery in every corner. Tropical sustainability reigns, with the hotel earning several accolades for its commitment to nature and sustainable practices.
In summary, there’s nothing cookie-cutter about this destination. The Palms feels a bit like a private club with beach access, purposefully looking to maintain an elevated family atmosphere, beckoning generations of travelers to return year after year.
I know I could easily be lulled back, making new memories with loved ones, surrounded by The Palms’ old-world charm.

The 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair was one of the first major music festivals to offer on-site camping, allowing attendees to remain immersed in the experience without ever leaving the grounds. These days, vast stretches of summer farmland east and west of the festival site are still transformed each summer into a cultural wonderland, offering bazaars, arts and crafts, music and educational events, and camping sites, providing festival-goers with a peaceful escape into nature and allowing visitors today to experience the same landscape that welcomed 450,000 people during the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival event.
