Lovers of the iconic film The Sound of Music and the fascinating story of the von Trapp family have Salzburg on their travel radar this year to celebrate the movie’s 60th anniversary. The city is already a year-round destination for its food, culture and beauty, where film fans regularly enjoy themed tours and visits to film sites. Next year, though, attractions will expand with the opening of The Sound of Music museum.
Don’t dally when booking accommodations. According to Michael Gigl, director, Austria Tourism New York, Salzburg receives around 300,000 visitors each year who arrive to visit locations associated with the film. He notes that during this anniversary year, memorable events include tours in Salzburg led by Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Maria and Georg von Trapp.

“[This] has a huge economic impact on the city of Salzburg and Austria in general,” said Gigl. “In a broader sense, The Sound of Music has shaped the image of Austria in the USA, Australia, and many Asian countries significantly. The connection between the ‘real’ von Trapp family, some of them in Vermont, is still ongoing and being cultivated.”
At Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, a new My Favorite Things getaway plays on one of the film’s best-loved tunes with an immersive The Sound of Music experience. Guests will be treated to an exclusive live performance by Elisabeth von Trapp, enjoy a three-course dinner at Schloss Restaurant with a menu inspired by original Austrian recipes featured in the film and embark upon a private tour of Salzburg’s Old Town. The tour will take in The Sound of Music filming locations, and include a horse-drawn carriage ride and an interlude starring apple strudel.

“The Sound of Music is more than a film — it has become a cultural bridge between Salzburg and the world,” added Beate Kassner, CEO, Salzburg City Tourist Board. “For 60 years, this story of music, courage, and belonging has drawn countless visitors to our city, especially from the United States, which remains our most important overseas market and the third-most significant overall. The 60th anniversary is a unique opportunity to celebrate a film that continues to shape Salzburg’s international image. Throughout 2025, a rich program of exhibitions and events will highlight the legacy of the movie and invite fans to experience the magic of its original locations.”
