The Lexington Hotel Debuts Specialty Suites

by Kimberly Inlander

Oct 12, 2018

Last week I had the pleasure of touring The Lexington Hotel, Autograph Collection’s redesigned specialty suites with the designers from Fringe, the renowned interior design firm behind the renovation. It was a treat to hear more about the new designs from the masterminds behind the aesthetic.

The Norma Jeane Suite debuted in June, timed to the icon’s birthday. Marilyn Monroe lived in the hotel for a brief time with Joe DiMaggio. With touches befitting the legend throughout, the suite also features a 200-square-foot terrace.

The hotel’s history harkens to the Golden Age of Jazz in New York City, making the Lady Ella Suite a fitting tribute. From touches that include cover art, references to the Apollo Theater and custom pillows, the suite’s two bedrooms and outdoor space are fit for the likes of Ella Fitzgerald.

Another legend, this time in broadcasting, was Arthur Godfrey, and the so-named suite is a retro throwback. The suite includes a bar and dining room, and the bedroom includes homages to Godfrey’s time in the Air Force and induction in the Aviation Hall of Fame. Interesting touches appear throughout.

Speaking of interesting touches, the Hemingway Suite is rich with nods to Ernest Hemingway’s adventurous spirit and love of travel. Two terraces, a collection of his novels, a vintage typewriter, a Panama hat and more help bring the vibe to life.

The Hawaiian Room was a former entertainment venue at the hotel, 1937–1966. While the Hawai’ian theme could be campy, at The Lexington Hotel, it’s done with a sleek, modern touch that is anything but over-the-top. Think vintage barware and leaf fans.

And finally, I end where I actually started my tour: The Conservatory’s glass-enclosed living room, with views of New York City, is a real showstopper. The designers took into account the hotel’s architectural heritage and added upgrades, including a hand-carved tropical hardwood bed, topiary, custom artwork and an English Zinc chandelier.

With far too many touches to name here in each suite, I asked the designer where she sourced some of the unique pieces and knick-knacks. While they came from all over the globe, she noted Etsy ended up being a surprising source for some of the more obscure items.

All suites are now bookable, so take the opportunity to visit on an overnight stay sometime soon!

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.
