Chicago Festivals

Summer in Chicago means festivals. This summer there are more than ever, and I am looking forward to several.

Despite not eating beef, I always enjoy the Roscoe Village Burger Fest. I find some interesting alternative burger options and delicious, fresh-cut fries. I’m also looking forward to great live music, especially Vinyl Theatre. It takes place on Chicago’s near North Side July 14–15.

Artfest Michigan Avenue runs July 20–22 on Chicago’s historic and scenic downtown street. More than 100 artists will have their beautiful creations on display.

Closer to my home is Jeff Fest, on the northwest side of Chicago Aug. 3–5. I always catch up with old workmates and softball teammates at Jeff Fest. It is a relaxing event of food and music, highlighted for me by Hi Infidelity.

Almost in my backyard, Skokie’s Backlot Bash runs Aug. 24–26. The 5k run, food and carnival games are fun, but this Bash is all about the music for me. Foghat and Tributosaurus are appearing. I’ll actually be enjoying those performances from my balcony.

I love tacos, and there is no better place to sample dozens of interesting taco options than the Sam Adams Lakeview Taco Fest. Held on the north side of Chicago, Taco Fest also features special beers and live music.

There are more than 30 other festivals scheduled through September. All have some combination of arts, crafts, music and food, but the special part is simply reconnecting with friends from all over the city.

Williamsburg Inn Review

You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.

Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu

Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
