My first experience with St. Demetrios Parish on Chicago’s north side was at the wedding of my friend and current Global Traveler colleague Louie Atsaves. I was made an honorary Greek and honorary parishioner.

Over the years I have returned for a few events. The Thriller in the Miller is the most recent and one that holds a special place in my heart because I played a small part in its debut.

Founded in 1928 along with its Solon Greek School, Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church was constructed as a simple parish and Greek parochial school. Nearing the century mark at its original location, it has grown into one of the leading Greek Orthodox churches in North America.

Three years ago I ran into my friend Billy Frigelis, who told me about a fundraiser he was organizing for St. Demetrios. Knowing I have a few connections in local entertainment, Billy asked for some suggestions. I immediately recommended 2econd, a new sports entertainment company headed by Rabbi Jeremy Fine.

A few months later I attended the inaugural Thriller in the Miller. I was impressed, as I saw a few hundred people there to support their parish. I was even more impressed with Billy, Jimmy Stamos, George Figelis, Nicole Leftakes, Noula Frigelis and all the volunteers who made it a first-class evening. Last year the crowd grew even bigger. Last Saturday, despite near-record low temperatures and an impending snowstorm, it was a packed house once again.

2econd put on its usual outstanding show, and the crowd loved it. Whether they call it sports entertainment or wrestling, the crowd was into the action all night.

One of the best parts of the night is the feeling of family. Everyone there, including “outsiders” like Tony and me, are treated as part of one big Greek family. Hugs and handshakes were everywhere. Folks we only see at each year’s Thriller in the Miller greet us like brothers.

Coincidentally held on my birthday weekend, I always look forward to Thriller in the Miller. It makes the weekend that much more special.
