Last Saturday, I spent just over 24 hours in Washington, D.C., with some friends from college. My prior visit to our nation’s capital was during a college service project, so I didn’t have a chance to explore the city as a tourist. This time, I wanted to squeeze in as much as possible during my one-day trip.

After stopping by my friend’s Dupont Circle apartment, we took the Metro straight to the Smithsonian area. With many museums to choose from, we all agreed on the National Museum of Natural History. Afterwards, we walked the National Mall, stopping at the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. We then swung by the White House before our leisurely stroll to my friend’s apartment. Tired from our more than 7-mile walk, we collapsed once back at the apartment. After a rest and a few glasses of water, we ventured out again for dinner and drinks. We walked the few blocks to Black Jack and shared several small plates including oysters, pizza and duck nachos. It was a nice end to a busy day.

The next morning for brunch, we chose Busyboys and Poets, a restaurant and bookstore/community gathering space. The menu features brunch staples including my choice of classic Eggs Benedict and a variety of vegan options. After a slow meal and some browsing in the bookstore, our short trip neared its end. We once again boarded the Metro, this time for Union Station, and took our respective modes of transportation home. It was a quick, fun visit, and I look forward to spending another weekend in D.C. again soon.
