Following my three days of meetings in Chicago with senior vice president Richard Evans, my mom met me in Chicago, one of our shared favorite U.S. cities, for a few days together. It happened to perfectly coincide with Mother’s Day weekend. We met Friday evening and checked into our lake-view room at the iconic Drake Hotel, which was abuzz for the holiday weekend. We decided to take it easy that night and grab some deep-dish pizza from Giordano’s and a pitcher of beer (Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat), then stroll the Magnificent Mile and retire early. Saturday, I kept us busy. After grabbing breakfast, we made our way to the river for a great architecture boat cruise with the Chicago Architecture Foundation. We followed that with a wonderful high tea at The Drake. Although a bit campy, I’m interested in Chicago’s crime history, and we booked an entertaining and informative Chicago Crime Tour to round out our day — all with a side of shopping on Michigan Avenue, of course. It was a perfect Saturday. Sunday was Mother’s Day, kicked off with a stop at Glazed and Infused before we made our way to Wrigley Field to watch the Chicago Cubs play the Washington Nationals. It went into extra innings, so we had to leave early to head to the airport, but it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon spent at an iconic ballpark. It was a treat to spend several days in Chicago combining business with pleasure and spending some quality time with my mom on Mother’s Day. — Kimberly Krol, editor in chief
