A sky filled with giant, colorful kites? We’re in! On the first day of November in Guatemala, ancient Mayan traditions are celebrated in the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and All Saints Day Kite Festival. Experience the festivities yourself with Bella Guatemala Travel — specialists in the country’s history, culture and heritage. Founded by Guatemalan native Elsie YiDonoy, the company leads a 10-day, nine-night tour Oct. 25–Nov. 4, including transfers to and from the airport and hotel, all domestic transportation (bus, boat, plane), accommodations in hotels and eco-lodges, three meals a day including one alcoholic drink at lunch/dinner, entrance fees and tours included in the itinerary, a professional bilingual tour guide, taxes and gratuities and a nifty water bottle to keep you hydrated.

Day of the DeadGroup size is limited to 16 participants, with planned activities including a visit to Tikal National Park, a tour of Filadelfia coffee plantation, a city tour of Antigua, a boat tour of Lake Atitlan, a foray to the Choco Museo Workshop, a chance to see Mayan weavers plying their trade, visits to museums and churches, a zip-lining expedition and even a volcano climbing session. The tour’s highlight takes place Nov. 1, when guests can see firsthand the practice of decorating gravestones and the elaborate preparations for kite launching on Dia de Los Muertos. Prices, excluding international airfare, begin at $4,495, per person, based on double occupancy. Among other organized journeys are the Lost Kingdoms Tour to explore the land of ancient Mayan ruins and the Guatemala Photo tour to jungles, lakes and beautiful villages.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
