The dreaded stopover in Beijing (PEK) could transform into an exciting second vacation, as foreign travelers to China’s capital city will no longer need a visa to visit and stay for up to six days.
The extra time allows travelers to visit not only Beijing, but also other nearby cities in the region, such as the port city of Tianjin.
The visa-free extension is just one part of a larger initiative to attract foreign investors and encourage businesses to move to the region. China also plans to decrease the number of necessary licenses required to set up a business from 15 to one.
Previously, travelers passing through could stay in Beijing for up to 72 hours, but this time limit was extended to 144 hours in late July. Although this initiative will not go into effect until the end of the calendar year, the visa-free benefit will be applicable to citizens of Schengen nations, other select European countries, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, South Korea, Japan and a handful of other nations.
