Beijing is building the world’s largest terminal at its new Beijing Daxing International Airport. The massive site, 29 miles south of the city, is three years into its construction and is set to open in 2019.
If it opened today, the airport would rank second in the world among the largest airports for passenger capacity, after Atlanta (ATL). It would rank eighth overall for size. The project is projected to cost $13 billion, making it China’s most expensive airport.
Daxing will have seven runways, 78 gates, a capsule hotel and transportation hub connecting to local and high-speed rail lines.
The airport’s 7.5-million-square-foot passenger terminal will be the world’s largest. It’s designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, marking the company’s first foray into airport design.
Daxing plans to take some of the pressure off Beijing Capital, the city’s main airport. Even though it’s less than 10 years old, it’s already tapped out, seeing 94.4 million passengers last year alone. Daxing is expected to handle 100 million annually.
