Avis Announces Fully Connected Fleet for Kansas City

Last month, Avis Budget Group unveiled the company’s first fully connected wireless fleet of cars in Kansas City, Mo.

Avis connected all 5,000 cars in the fleet with wireless technology to enhance fleet management services. The network will also allow live data sharing with Kansas City officials to sharpen traffic flow models and help improve travelers’ experience when they rent with Avis.

The newly connected fleet will allow customers to manage the rental process through an app, including locking and unlocking doors or honking the horn to locate the car. Connected vehicles can also help manage the life cycle of the cars.

Avis says its goal is to connect its entire global fleet by 2020, which includes 400,000 cars in the United States alone.

“As we think about how we’re managing our own fleet, we’re also looking to see how we can do this for others as well,” said Larry De Shon, CEO, AVIS. “There’s a lot of learning that will come out of this that will be beneficial as we look at fleet management as a service.”

The connectivity also helps Avis move toward self-driving cars. Avis signed a deal with Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo to manage its autonomous fleet.
