Gorgeous flowers. It’s Valentine’s Day and they’re everywhere. Brilliant hues and soft pastels. Long stem, short stem, no stem. And they’re all fresh as a daisy (pun intended), even in regions of the country where garden patches will be frozen over for at least another month or so.
Avianca plays a role in ensuring romance reaches the northern climes. Between Jan. 19 and Feb. 8, the airline’s cargo division leveraged specialized technology for the transportation of perishable goods to deliver a wide variety of flowers from Colombia and Ecuador to cities around the globe.
The operation included 176 non-stop flights from Bogotá (BOG), Medellín (MDE) and Quito (UIO) to Miami (MIA), Los Angeles (LAX) and San Juan (SJU). Agreements with warehouses to ensure stability of the cold chain and Avianca’s fleet of Airbus A330 aircraft configured with special compartments and temperature control contributed to the success of the airlift.

Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
