Nov. 16–April 15, 2018, visitors to New York City’s Madison Square Park can revel in the sparkling lights of Whiteout, a newly commissioned public art exhibition by Austrian-born artist Erwin Redl. An undulating, computer-generated wave pattern will move across hundreds of transparent white spheres, each embedded with LED lights and suspended from a network of steel poles and cabling two feet above the ground on the park’s central Oval Lawn. The organic movement of wind and air occurring around them will also directly influence the lights.

Redl is well known around the world for his large-scale light projects, often displayed on building façades, including a 2002 piece projected onto the Whitney Museum of American Art, and a 2010 installation on the Wexner Center at the Ohio State University in Columbus. The artist holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Music Performing Arts in Vienna, and an MFA in computer art from the School of Visual Arts. The combination of lights and kinetic movement created by Redl will be the 35^th in a series of outdoor exhibitions presented by Madison Square Park Conservancy.
