The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner added cars to each of its 10 daily trains serving Santa Barbara County, allowing for an additional 2,000 seats to help accommodate increased travel demand due to the closure of Highway 101 after the devastating mudslides near Montecito last month.
Train tracks reopened Jan. 11, and since then the service has been the only transportation option between Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Drive time on alternate routes can take considerable time — up to four hours compared to a 45-minute train ride.
Despite the added capacity, high demand for trains is expected to continue, and Amtrak told passengers to expect busy trains and delays through affected areas due to emergency personnel working on or near the railroad.
