Last month, American Airlines said it was raising prices for the first and second checked bags on domestic flights by $5 each. Changes are already in effect for tickets purchased.
Travelers now pay $30 for the first checked bag and $40 for the second. Prices apply to travel within the United States, North America and the Caribbean.
American said some customers are eligible for free checked bags, like AAdvantage members, Citi/AAdvantage cardmembers, customers confirmed in the first- or business-class cabin, customers traveling on military fares and more.
The price increase for checked bags was the first time any carrier made such a large hike since 2010, but other airlines followed suit. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines recently said they would increase prices for checked bags. Both airlines adopted the new price scheme, $30 for the first checked bag and $40 for the second.
