With the recent debut of the basic economy class of seats among a handful of major airlines, it hasn’t taken long for smaller airlines to follow suit in an effort to stay competitive. The latest U.S.-based airline to launch its own basic-economy program is Alaska Airlines.

Purchasing a basic-economy ticket means different things depending on the airline. While some allow passengers to select seats in advance of the flight, others only allow this for an additional fee. Basic-economy tickets are not entitled to exchanges or refunds, and all passengers must wait to board the plane after all other groups have boarded.

Alaska tested their basic-economy “saver” fares in early November on flights from San Diego (SAN) to three destinations and expanded this service into December. But, as of the beginning of January, the fare is available across the entire network.

Alaska Airlines joins other American airlines in adding this class of seats, while JetBlue plans to launch its own later this year. Southwest remains the only midscale domestic airline that has not added basic economy to flights, but time and competition may have an effect on this.
