Airbus predicts a $4.6 trillion worldwide market for commercial aircraft services, 2018–2037.

The analysis, found in the brand’s Global Services Forecast, finds aircraft-focused lifestyle services grow the most over the next 20 years, with services from design to dismantling focusing on maintenance, tooling, technical training, system upgrades and more.

The next largest category of services is flight operations services, Airbus predicts. This includes pilot training and flight-planning solutions. As fleets may double to 48,000 aircraft over the next 20 years, more than 540,000 new pilots are needed and smarter ways to train pilots are necessary.

The third component of the global services market is passenger experience, with services needed to optimize the in-flight experience, including cabin upgrades, cabin crew training, in-flight entertainment, connectivity and booking. Additionally, more passengers travel using smart devices over the next two decades and expect real-time information regarding airports, flights and bag collection.

In response to these needs, Airbus expects to triple its services revenue in the next decade. It also plans to offer its service portfolio to non-Airbus platforms, given 62 percent of Airbus’ total fleet is operated by multi-fleet operators.
