Airbus Competition Awards Idea for Below-Seat Luggage Compartment

The fight for overhead bin space on airplanes could possibly come to an end if a recent award-winning invention makes its way on board.

Each year, Airbus holds a competition called Fly Your Ideas, where 365 teams of students from around the world devise ways to improve air travel. This year, students from Hong Kong presented a prototype of their Private Stowage Compartment, a hollow box that fits under the seat in front of passengers that can hold a standard-sized carry-on and/or personal items.

Since the implementation of hefty fees to check bags, more passengers have been bringing carry-on bags only, making space for such luggage a luxury and forcing passengers who board at the end of the line have to store their bags in compartments that may be a number of rows behind or in front of them.

The Hong Kong team, DAELead, took home the $33,000 grand prize, which can be used to develop the product and market it to aerospace companies like Airbus.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
