As Airbnb attempts to expand its already successful brand, it also aims to go after the business traveler, hoping affordable prices and flexibility will sway dedicated spenders from their favorite hotel brands. The company says it is ideal for business travelers staying in a destination for multiple weeks, multiple employees traveling together and small group retreats. If travelers don’t mind living in the same house and sharing common spaces, it can be more cost-efficient for all to stay at an Airbnb property with multiple bedrooms and ample living space. The same is true for small group retreats of up to 10 people, when Airbnb’s most creative and unique spaces can provide places to work and socialize together, while still allowing for private bedrooms, without paying separately for the use of hotel meeting spaces and boardrooms. However, Airbnb does admit beginning this year, properties will automatically be adjusted for demand. This means a property normally $150 per night will automatically jump in price if the hotels within the area are also increasing prices. The new feature is currently active on a percentage of properties, but not all. While this does take away some of the luster of Airbnb’s competitive pricing, the company assures business travelers it can still be a much more affordable option, especially when taking into consideration group stays as mentioned above. Another way Airbnb expects to cater to business travelers this year is with the new Business Travel Ready feature, which will classify qualifying properties under this category. To qualify, properties must be an entire home or apartment (in contrast to a private room or suite), non-smoking, pet-free, reviewed at least three times, rated five stars for cleanliness, available for arrival 24/7 and consistent with safety regulations. Properties must also come with the following amenities: a laptop-friendly workspace, wireless internet, an iron, clothes hangers, a hair dyer, toiletries, fresh linens and clean towels. Hosts must also have a responsiveness record of fewer than 24 hours, 90 percent of the time. Properties who qualify will be continuously reevaluated to ensure they maintain Business Travel Ready standards.
