Airbnb is one of the newest sponsors of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The accommodation-sharing site partnered with the International Olympic Committee as one of the lodging providers for attendees to the world’s largest sporting event.

Airbnb joins a roster of big-name sponsors like Coca-Cola, Samsung, Visa and Toyota, with an agreement: The host city will set aside 40,000 rooms in rental properties for attendees and families of the athletes. This will take the pressure off hotels, which can easily fill up and have to turn people away when the Olympics come to town.

Now, cities won’t need to build new hotels and facilities for guests as they can turn to Airbnb for accommodation options.

The partnership with the IOC will begin at the Tokyo Games this year and will last until 2028, including the 2022 winter Games in Beijing, the next summer Games in Paris in 2024, the winter Games in Milan in 2026 and the summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028.

However, the concept is anything but new. More than a century ago, Johnson & Johnson offered its New Jersey-based employees access to an on-site health center and a fitness center with a swimming pool and basketball court. In the 1970s, the company followed with the launch of Live for Life, an on-site wellness program with “access to behavior modification tools and education on topics like nutrition, stress management and more.”
