Air Canada will stop greeting passengers with, “ladies and gentlemen.” Moving forward, the airline will use the gender-neutral terminology of “everybody.” The news broke through an internal memo sent to employees last month, obtained by French news outlet La Presse.

The update applies to all public announcements made to passengers by gate agents, flight attendants and pilots.

“We will be amending our onboard announcements to modernize them and remove specific references to gender,” the airline said in a statement. “We work hard to make sure all employees feel like valued members of the Air Canada family while ensuring our customers are comfortable and respected when they choose to travel with us.”

Air Canada did not say when the change will go into effect.

The decision was met by harsh social media responses, especially on Twitter, where many users complained about the change. It also comes on the heels of an announcement by Airlines for America, an industry trade group, which said it will expand gender options for U.S. passengers booking flights, including “unspecified” and “undisclosed,” according to CNN.
