In a recent study by The Travel Leaders Group and Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel is an increasingly popular theme for baby boomers — totaling a $683 billion industry. Of those staggering numbers, 22 percent of adventure travelers fell between the 51–60 age range — merely 1 percentage point difference from adventure travelers in the 29–40 age range.

While base-jumping and heli-skiing may not top the list for baby boomers, biking and meaningful hikes are on a long list of adventure activities favorited by travelers.

While adventure and active travel is climbing the ranks over relaxation- and restoration-focused vacations, the top destination for adventurous baby boomers is Western Europe — an easy choice for biking, scenic hikes and idyllic adventure activities throughout Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Following Western Europe, Central American territories including Costa Rica, Belize and Guatemala follow with North America close behind.

The Caribbean, South Pacific including Fiji, Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia follow as top destinations for adventure travelers. The most popular activities and types of adventure activities include cultural tours, hiking and culinary tourism.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
