According to AAA predictions, more than 54 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more for Thanksgiving festivities — nearly a 5 percent increase from last year. The predicted increase calls for 2.5 million more travelers hitting the roads, rails, water and skies over the course of the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 21–25.

Of the 54 million travelers expected to venture away from home this holiday season, 48.5 million of them will be on the road.

For those going a greater distance and flying, a record increase of 5.4 percent is expected to fly, totaling 4.27 million travelers.

Everyone else hopping on public transportation, from buses and trains to even cruise ships, expect a 1.4 percent increase. While this might not sound like much, it actually comes to around 1.48 million passengers, which adds up when considering you may be among them.

Based on these numbers, it’s clear roadways will be busiest of all transportation systems by comparison.
