Would you be interested in dining on an old Air India plane transformed into a restaurant? A very aerodynamic restaurant — or a very slow airplane — debuted in India to offer a unique dining experience.

The airplane restaurant is called Hawai Adda. The once proud aircraft now enjoys retirement on the ground while still serving travelers.

“We were inspired by the Maharaja Express [a luxurious food and travel experience inside a train in New Delhi] and wanted to create something similar inside a plane,” explains Parampreet Singh Luthra, director, Hands Hospitality. “We wanted to retain most of the original bits of the aircraft including 1 million wires. So, we had to hire experienced engineers and airline support staff who knew the drill.”

The swanky, 72-seat, vegetarian-based restaurant is crafted from an Airbus A320 aircraft that once flew for Air India. The restaurant name translates to ‘airport’ in Hindi, replicated by the ambiance. The restaurant, situated in the northern Indian city of Ludhiana, took more than a year to create and opened to the public in December 2016. The aircraft also has a café, bakery and a kitty hall that can hold up to 40 people. Besides the furniture, all original elements of the plane are preserved.

The restaurant is known for being India’s first airplane restaurant and adds to the country’s list of unique restaurants.
