American Airlines flew its final propeller-driven flight, closing a chapter dating back to the dawn of commercial airline service.

Inc reported American Eagle Flight 4297, from Charlotte, North Carolina (CLT), to Salisbury, Maryland (SBY), July 3 was the final non-jet trip operated by a major U.S. airline. The flight lasted just over an hour and a half using the once common Bombardier Dash 8-300 turboprop.

Delta Air Lines and United Airlines retired all propeller planes, and Southwest Airlines has always exclusively flown the Boeing 737 jetliner.

“American was the [airline] that held out the longest. Why? Because American (and its predecessors via US Airways) serves a lot of small towns,” according to The Cranky Flier blog.

“The Dash 8 had the right mix of economics and aircraft size, but even that had to end eventually. The aircraft started reaching the end of their lives, and maintenance kept getting more expensive.”

There are still plenty of low-altitude, propeller-driven planes in rotation elsewhere, though: Alaska Airlines still flies them, as do several smaller airlines.
