Hong Kong International Airport set three new annual records during the fiscal year ending in March 2018.
During the year, Hong Kong handled 73.6 million passengers on 423,390 flight movements. These numbers represent an increase of 4.5 per cent and 3.2 per cent, respectively. Cargo and airmail traffic also rose to 5.1 million tonnes at an increase of 7.6 per cent over the previous year.
This year marks the airport’s 20th anniversary. According to HKG, in those 20 years, destinations served by the airport increased from 120 to more than 220. Airlines served at the airport increased to more than 120 from 60. Last year, the airport added nine destinations and 13 new airlines to its repertoire.
“Hong Kong International Airport has achieved remarkable growth over the past two decades. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the 73,000-strong airport community and to everyone who has contributed to HKIA’s success. HKIA is at the heart of Hong Kong’s economy, driving the development of our pillar industries. Without an efficient airport, our city would not have achieved its current level of success. We are committed to Hong Kong International Airport’s continuous development to meet the aviation needs of this part of the world,” said Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman, Airport Authority, Hong Kong.
Through the record breaking and accolades, the airport continues to revamp the services it offers. New mobile check-in kiosks, a renovated food court and improved infrastructure are in development, the airport said.
