Emirates will fly long-haul routes to Stansted (STN), London’s third-largest airport, from Dubai (DXB) next year.
Located 35 minutes north of London, Stansted is mostly known as a budget hub and base of Ryanair. The airport works to reel in major airlines, and Emirates, the world’s largest intercontinental airline, will make the move. The route will launch June 8.
“Opening the London Stansted gateway was a strategic decision by Emirates to serve the thriving business community in London’s northeast and the wider 7.5 million population that fall within its catchment area,” Emirates said in a statement.
Emirates chose Stansted because it’s surrounded by tech and pharmaceutical industries in Cambridge and Peterborough. Companies like AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline have operations nearby.
A Boeing 777-300ER will operate the route with a three-class configuration including fully enclosed private suites in first class.
